Hello everybody! Welcome to my Liberapay crowdfunding page :-) I am seeking to raise 2000SGD for this event!

And also, I'll put this at the top for emphasis:

ALL DONORS WILL RECEIVE A DIGITAL VERSION OF MY ARTWORKS AS A TOKEN OF APPRECIATION, PLEASE LEAVE AN EMAIL OR NAME OR SOMETHING SO I CAN SEND YOU (if you've already donated please please let me know so I can send you the files, some of y'all are being so generous already thank youuuuu) (;人;)

so if you can't come to the actual exhibition don't worry, you'll still be able to appreciate the art! ヾ(・ω・`)

First of all...who/what/how is Ilysia?

I’m Ilysia! I am a Malaysian composer currently living and studying in Singapore. I’m getting my Bachelor’s in Music Composition from Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in a few months so I’m very excited and a little bit nervous, also stressed ugh ⊙﹏⊙

As for the type of music I compose: it’s super varied! I’ve evolved a lot over the past few years. I started out really liking film music, one of my favorite tracks was “Oogway Ascends” from Kung Fu Panda! I loved the journey that the track took the listener on. After studying at the Conservatory for a few years, I’ve done a lot of different things. I composed some traditional avant-garde music, I had fun making some lo-fi hip hop beats, performed in an improv-extended-cinema-noise trio at the Kuala Lumpur Experimental Film and Video Festival, and I even got to compose a soundtrack for Stan Brakhage’s film “Garden of Earthly Delights!”

For my upcoming (and biggest) project, I’m taking a multi-faceted approach and doing some things I’ve never done before: I’m opening an exhibition to showcase my 3 latest works! ୧☉□☉୨

The exhibition is named:

Wait, what? Ilysia_world1? What is that?

Okok, I’ll explain! So, usually composers from my school put on a small concert and have their works performed in school, but because of the pandemic this model isn’t really workable. Nobody from outside the school is allowed to watch our concerts anymore! So lame... (-_-) That would mean that my family, friends from outside my school, and other arts appreciators in Singapore wouldn’t be able to see my work.

So instead of having a small concert in the school where nobody except my small circle of composer friends would be able to watch, I've decided to make an outside exhibition to showcase all of my works! This would let all of my family members, friends, and cool people I’ve met come and see what I’ve been up to for the past few years (〃▽〃)

Also, I’m finding that my newer pieces are sort of moving away from the traditional, classical, concert-going experience. In Singapore, people generally don’t want to go to a concert hall, sit in a chair for an hour, and just be quiet and listen to some old music. It’s not so appealing...so I wanted to do something that’s a bit unconventional, more cool and interesting! (◔ڼ◔)

Speaking of which! The pieces that will be featured in this exhibition are some of my most ambitious:

  1. In-Cube-A-Tour (Incubator), a video game/virtual world/sonic installation built inside of the Unreal Engine featuring level, sound, and game design by me and my amazing game designer cousin, Brydon Tan

  2. Pecah! a work for 2 vocalists and projected video installation composed for 2 totally prolific artists and also 2 of my best friends and mentors, Bani Haykal and Ila. Featuring text from a badass, underrated poet and dear friend, Hamid Roslan

  3. The Seductive Myth of Nature, a piece for 10 instrumentalists and field recordings. I completely stole the title of this piece from a very insightful book by Alan Levinovitz “Natural: The Seductive Myth of Nature’s Goodness” Please read it, extremely interesting and enticing to read! (⊃‿⊂)

Here are all of the performers of The Seductive Myth of Nature! Love you all <3

  • Conductor - Siew Woon Choy
  • Flute - Viktoria Klyukina
  • Oboe - Соня Рахматуллина (Soniya)
  • Clarinet - Benny Lim
  • Bassoon - Javlon Hayitov
  • Trumpet - Stamp Netthai
  • Trombone - William Yee
  • Percussion - Adam Sharawi
  • Viola - Danish Lim
  • Cello - Noah Diggs
  • Double Bass - Eugene Chew

In addition to all these pieces, I’ll be decorating and redesigning the entire gallery space with fake plants, real plants, construction equipment, minecraft trees, and other fun stuff that suits the themes of my pieces!

Ok, serious talk, why do I need your money help?

Ok ya, this all sounds very cool and stuff, but it’s kinda (really) expensive… I’m kinda (really) doing a lot of the production and admin and marketing and logistical and scheduling and communications and managing work myself!!!...doing all that plus the actual artistic work is leaving me pretty wiped out and stressed ( ̄Д ̄)

Financially, I’ve gotten some support from my school, and some from my mom ( <3 you miii ︶ε╰✿ ) and a lot from my boyfriend lol. But there’s a lot of costs to cover unfortunately.

Here! I’ll be super transparent for all of you:

I’m renting a 400 sq. ft. gallery space from Gillman Barracks, a prominent art space in Singapore,

for 4 days (3 of them are for setup) to make sure there’s enough space for audience and performers to maintain social distancing.

  • License Fees: $447.00
  • GST: $31.29
  • Security Deposit: $2,000.00
  • Administration Fee: $200.00
  • Utilities: $xx.xx

(this is already a reduced price since the event is free for everybody! no tickets needed for entry! also this isn't including utilities which is calculated after the event, also also I get the security deposit back in May hopefully ◕_◕)

I have a lot of performers, some helpers, and a few artists helping me that I REALLY wanna pay for all their hard work.

Labour is labour, even if it’s from friends, and it’s important that I don’t exploit their kindness.

  • Main artists (Bani Haykal & ila) piece for 2 voices $800.00
  • Scripter/Coding engineer (Brydon Tan) game/music installation $400.00
  • 10 x instrumental performers (honorarium) chamber piece $500.00
  • 1 conductor (honorarium) chamber piece $50.00

(to my YST friends, my goal is to pay you $50 each, I don’t think I can guarantee but I really hope that I can, if not I will repay y’all with good food promise (⊃◜⌓◝⊂)

I have some big stuff (like big percussion instruments, double bass, projectors, screens, computers+monitors+mice, etc.)

that I need to get from place to place so transport cost is something that I have to factor in \ō͡≡o~ (vroom)

  • Moving service (for double bass, percussion, tech, decorations) 2-way $600.00

There’s a ton of other small things

like chairs, cushions, mats, decorations, tables, papers/banners, music stands, lights, etc. that I also will need to buy...I’ll put all that stuff and its cost here as I discover that I need them ʕ→ᴥ←ʔ

  • Plants: $346.97
  • Construction Material: $377.71
  • Ikea stuff: $62.87
  • 2 Smoke Machine Rental (from Valentine Music a local SG business): $160.00
  • Chair Rental: $210.00
  • Transportation: $272.00

And that’s sort of everything! You can contact me at <ilysia.composer@gmail.com> if you wanna talk to me more about my project :-) I really hope to be able to do this thing and do it well!

Also omg I almost forgot, if you contribute to my Liberapay you get a bunch of cool digital goodies including:

  • 1 mp3 file of my professionally recorded orchestra piece “The Seductive Myth of Nature”
  • 1 video file of my work for 2 vocalists and video installation “Pecah!”
  • 1 executable file of my video game/virtual world/sonic installation “In-Cube-A-Tour”

Here’s all the other cool artists involved with this project! (☆^ー^☆)

bani haykal experiments with text + music.

As an artist, composer and musician, bani considers music (making / processes) as material and his projects investigate modes of interfacing and interaction with feedback / feedforward mechanisms. He is a member of b-quartet.

Manifestations of his research culminate into works of various forms encompassing installation, poetry and performance. In his capacity as a collaborator and a soloist, bani has participated in festivals including MeCA Festival (Japan), Wiener Festwochen (Vienna), Media/Art Kitchen (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Japan), Liquid Architecture and Singapore International Festival of Arts (Singapore) among others.

ila’s (@ilailailailaila_ ) research centres on peripheral narratives

surrounding identity, space and histories that lie hidden, particularly kinship with the land and sea. She writes short speculative prose on @myheartisanelephant, an ongoing project about the city titled pura-pura parade. ⁣ ⁣she does art sometimes.

Brydon Tan (@noob.hero) is currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science and Game Design.

He is a creative person who likes to think out of the box when exposed to new skills. His current interests in education are game design and machine learning. He is a teaching assistant at DigiPen Institute of Technology Singapore for Mathematics, Computer Science Modules and also working in the Academic Support Centre for Mathematics, Computer Science Modules.
